José Sabater
I’m José, I come originally from Spain, let me tell you a bit about myself! I was born in Venezuela to Spanish parents, who had a very strong sense of adventure. We lived there briefly but soon moved to Florida, USA where we stayed until I was 8. Missing the Spanish language and culture we came back to our home country and settled in Tenerife in the Canary Islands where I grew up.
I kept my Canarian accent, which is quite noticeable if you hear me speak Spanish. From Tenerife, I also kept my calm behavior and my love for the ocean. I start missing it greatly if I spend extensive periods of time away from hearing the waves. Of course, something that will always remain for me is all the wonderful friends that I made growing up there and all the memories that remain in my head.

I soon moved to Madrid where the next chapter of my life started. Here I studied Aerospace engineering and met some of my best friends to date. Years that shaped me as a person and that defined the beginning of my professional path! However, at this time what I was doing was very far away from programming or Data analytics it still took me some years to find my way to where I am today.

Wanting to go abroad and keep the adventure blood strong, I decided to do a Master’s in Sweden. Where I started on the path to Data Science. I studied Industrial Engineering and Management there but specialized in statistics. Although I had done snowboarding before and been to “Snow Resorts” I was really not prepared for my first winter at negative temperatures. It was incredible, how beautiful it is to see everything white!
At the same time, it was very challenging to find the right amount of clothing or to bike to university when everything is slippery (yes I fell many times, many of them after partying all night). Well, what initially was planned to be a 2-year stay, has been extended until today.

As a person I’m an extrovert, that loves spending time with others. You will probably catch me out in nature doing some hiking, or maybe playing some online games with friends. I love traveling and spend a lot of my time just moving around the world. I have been doing sports all my life, earlier a lot of football, but today you will see me climbing several times a week! On many of these occasions, I have my brother with me, who is one of the most important people in my life, and also very similar to me.

I couldn´t conclude this section about myself without mentioning my favorite place in the world. In Swedish, there is a word: “Smultronställe” Which figuratively means: “a pleasant place with sentimental and personal value”. Well, my Smultronställe is close to the sea, and I have spent every summer of my life there. When I travel there I have a feeling of peace and happiness, and always get to meet my friends and family there that feel the same way.
